Tony Wilson gets the sarky treatment from Hannet
As a north-west England native, this brought back fond memories of Granada TV. Tony Wilson does a special report on producer and all-round legend and supergenius Martin Hannet. Perhaps best known as the producer of Joy Division’s first two albums and a lot of other Manc stuff from around that time.
This is a gem for mancuniana geeks (my own term) as well as studio/gear heads. His drum tweaking is really interesting and it’ll probably come as a shock as he describes “new” technologies like parametric EQ. He’s also loving winding Wilson up, who can just grin through Hannet’s goading. The manucunian accent has a unique quality that lends itself to laconic sarcasm. I love his description of the snare’s central role in rock and roll as “playing the offbeats with a good deal of vigour”.
